A Closer Look at Orthodontic Therapy
Orthodontics is designed to correct both the appearance of your smile and malocclusion (the positioning of your teeth when your mouth is closed). The cosmetic benefits of treatment are obvious. Your orthodontic plan will be designed to address crookedness, turned teeth, gaps, and overcrowding, making your smile and face look more symmetrical. Proper alignment also encourages better dental hygiene, allowing you to thoroughly clean each tooth and better prevent infection and decay.
While most people consider orthodontics as a solution for crooked teeth, treatment to correct the jaws can be equally important to how you look and feel. Ideally, the upper and lower jaw should meet evenly, and distribute a balanced amount of pressure amongst your dental arches. An overbite (a protruding upper jaw), underbite (a protruding lower jaw), or crossbite (teeth that overlap improperly) can lead to uncomfortable side effects and impact the shape of your face. Your orthodontic plan should give you a more attractive-looking bite and can prevent even more serious problems like TMJ.
Braces are the most traditional method of orthodontics that align crooked teeth and jaws with metal brackets and archwires. While braces are still commonly used, especially among young patients, Jersey City Dental favors more modern and discreet orthodontic options.
Clear aligners are nearly invisible plastic mouthpieces that gently shift the teeth into the proper position. Our team uses the high-tech Invisalign® system to correct mild to moderate dental misalignment for people of most ages. Treatment is easy and usually complete within six to 18 months.
What Ages Can Benefit from Orthodontic Treatment?
Children can undergo orthodontic treatment as soon as their adult teeth have grown in, typically between the ages of eight and 14. While this may be a little early for some children to handle their treatment responsibly, it is never too early for an evaluation. Our Jersey City dentists can examine your child's smile, diagnose the severity of malocclusion, and recommend the proper treatment when they are ready.
Many patients will need to go through orthodontic therapy in their teen years, but dread the idea of metal braces. Invisalign is a more appealing option for image-conscious teenagers and is effective for patients of any age when used properly. We now offer Invisalign Teen which comes with an accountability tracker so you can monitor the amount of time your child wears their trays.
It's never too late to begin orthodontic treatment, even for patients well into adulthood. If poor alignment is affecting your dental function or your self-confidence, you are likely a great candidate for orthodontics. Certain patients, especially those who have undergone orthodontic therapy in childhood and failed to maintain their results, may qualify for Invisalign Express which condenses treatment into six months or less.
How Long Do the Results Last?
The results of orthodontic care are permanent as long as you follow your maintenance instructions properly. For our Invisalign patients, this typically involves wearing a retainer at night. The retainer is very similar to your aligners. In fact, many patients use the last aligner in their series. Generally, as long as you continue to wear a night-time retainer, you can enjoy a straighter, more symmetrical smile for the rest of your life.
