A Look at an Infected Tooth

The blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues inside of a tooth are known as the pulp. If your tooth has a crack or a cavity, bacteria can enter the tooth and cause the pulp to become infected or inflamed. Infections in the pulp can cause pain, increase your sensitivity to hot or cold, and discolor your gums.

The infection in the pulp needs to be removed as soon as possible to save the natural tooth. If not, an extraction may be necessary for the future. Without treatment, decay can spread to other teeth. The infection can eventually enter your bloodstream and spread to other areas of your body.

Address Tooth Pain With a Root Canal

During a root canal treatment, an endodontist - a dentist who specializes in repairing tissue inside the tooth - removes infected pulp from the interior of a tooth. The infected area of a tooth is often the cause of pain. A root canal treatment also prevents bacteria from destroying the tooth, saving the natural tooth structure and eliminating the need for an extraction. The treated tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with durable dental material.

During the procedure, the endodontist will use rotary instruments. These tools allow dentists access to the inside of the tooth and the ability to remove the infection. Our rotary tools are quieter and more comfortable for patients than hand file instruments.

If the tooth is too decayed for a root canal, your dentist may recommend an extraction and an implant.

The Jersey City Dental Difference Choose Us For Your Root Canal

Expertise

Dr. Douglas is an award-winning endodontist who specializes in diagnosing and treating tooth pain. As a member of the American Association of Endodontics, Dr. Douglas has been recognized for her project outlining a novel technique in pulp regeneration.

One-Day Treatment

A root canal procedure and tooth restoration can take weeks at some dentist offices. Our dentist office can usually treat your tooth and create a protective crown for it in one visit thanks to our CEREC® system. This technology allows us to custom-make your crown and create it in-house. Dr. Ciardiello or Dr. Paek can fit the crown, completing your root canal treatment and restoration on the same day.

Root Canal Treatment What to Expect

"Since patients are given anesthesia, a root canal isn’t more painful than a regular dental procedure, such as a filling or getting a wisdom tooth removed."

Consultation

If you are experiencing decay and pain in your teeth, schedule a consultation. Our endodontist Dr. Douglas will examine and x-ray your teeth to diagnose your condition. Sensitivity in your teeth can come from a cavity or a less serious issue. However, if an infection is discovered, a root canal treatment will be recommended.

Anesthesia

Before removing the infection in your pulp, Dr. Douglas will administer a local anesthetic in the area around your infected tooth.

Root Canal

After your tooth is numb, Dr. Douglas will create an opening at the top of the tooth so she can access the pulp. The infection is eliminated as the dental pulp is removed. The inside of the tooth is then disinfected and filled with dental material for support.

Crown

After the root canal is clear of infection, a dental crown is usually placed on the remaining tooth structure. Crowns are tooth-shaped prosthetics that cover and protect the tooth. Our CEREC technology can create a crown for you the same day as your root canal procedure, completing your treatment and fitting in one visit.

Are Root Canals Painful?

Some patients may avoid root canals due to the misconception that the procedure is painful. However, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is generally no more uncomfortable than receiving a filling.

After your root canal, you might feel some discomfort or soreness for a few days. Over-the-counter medications can effectively manage the pain.

If you have any questions about pain and discomfort associated with root canals, please let our dentists know during your consultation. We will be happy to answer your questions and talk about your concerns.

Benefits of a Root Canal

Pain Relief

After the infected tissue is removed from your tooth, you should feel much more relief. Chewing and speaking will be much more comfortable.

Protecting Your Health

If left untreated, infected teeth can lead to bone deterioration in the jaw and abscess. A root canal prevents these health issues, negating the need for extraction or an implant.

Saving Your Tooth

Saving Your Tooth: If a root canal is successful, you will keep your natural tooth. This translates to a stronger bit, which can let you eat a wider variety of food.

Jersey City Dental, NJ, offers 0% financing options for qualified patients. In addition to accepting major credit cards, we also accept the following insurances:
  • MetLife
  • Aetna
