Inlays and Onlays
An inlay or onlay can repair a tooth following treatment for decay that is too advanced to be addressed with filling, but not extensive enough to require a crown. The restorative treatment uses porcelain to replace damaged tissue, much like a puzzle piece. Inlays fit within the chewing surface of a tooth while onlays also cover one or more edges of a tooth.
Our doctors provide inlays and onlays at our Jersey City, NJ, office. If you are in need of cavity treatment, we can determine if this or another solution is the best way to restore your teeth. In some cases, we can provide custom inlays and onlays in a single appointment.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
Patients who undergo this procedure at our Jersey City clinic can benefit from:
- Restored oral health: More than 91 percent of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have a cavity, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Left untreated, a cavity will continue to grow, placing your entire tooth and surrounding teeth in jeopardy. An inlay or onlay can be the all-important finishing touch once decayed tissue has been removed.
- Affordable treatment: Inlays and onlays are more affordable than a dental crown. Since inlays and onlays serve a restorative purpose, insurance plans commonly cover part or all of the costs of the procedure.
- Natural-looking results: Inlays and onlays are manufactured with a special material that matches the look, color, and feel of your natural teeth. One of our doctors will ensure that your inlay or onlay seamlessly blends with your natural teeth.
Am I a Candidate?
Candidates for this procedure have dental decay that cannot be treated with fillings, and is not extensive enough to require a dental crown, root canal, or tooth extraction. During your consultation, one of our doctors will asses the extent of decay before recommending inlays or onlays.
Our office can provide same-day restorative services with CEREC® technology in many cases.
How the Procedure Works
One of our doctors will use a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Then, a special drill will be used to clean the cavity and remove any remaining areas of decay. One the cavity has been cleaned, an impression of your tooth will be made. Our office can provide same-day restorative services with CEREC® technology in many cases. Once it is ready, your custom inlay or onlay will be fitted and your bite will be assessed. Once it achieves a proper fit, a strong bonding agent will be used to attach the restoration.
